GRANAGH NOTES - 1st & 2nd FEB

Granagh Players with producer Jimmy Sheehy.

COMHBHRÓN;
Elizabeth O'Rourke ( nee Tierney) was laid to rest on Friday 27th January in Granagh cemetery.   Our sympathies are extended to sons Pat, Mike, Liam, daughters Kathleen, Anne and Lily, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

GRANAGH  PLAYERS:
The community centre was a hive of activity over the weekend.  Tarry Flynn attracted huge crowds , especially Saturday night and traffic came to a standstill for a time.!   When this happens we know it will be busy busy.   Sean and Mick were to the pin of their collar , trying to get seats for everyone.   Every single chair, stool and bench were hunted out, the cast had to part with their chairs and were left to share the three sugáns between them, the hall was full at 7.40pm, at 8pm overflowing.   It is a great complaint to have and full credit to the producer and cast for their exacting performances each night.   Spotted in the audience, the new Mrs. Stephen Chawke who brought her family down from Galway, as promised.   Joan Sheehy popped down from the big smoke !      We had another gentleman coming all the way from west Cork with the help of the Sat-nav.   Two ladies who attend the play every year, but not the same night , made an appointment to meet this year on Saturday night.   They went to school together, always kept in touch, but hadn't actually met in twenty six years.!                            This is what its all about. !      I also know that Mallory Fennessy, ( Marylee's nephew ) went to an enormous amount of trouble to source a special latex make-up so that she would look a good twenty years older.   It worked, she looked a ' total dread' the first night we saw her.!
Our committee and volunteers were run off their feet but because of everyone's co-operation, each night ran smoothly, without a hitch.  We are indebted to them all for giving of their time and talents.
Many thanks to our local radio stations - Ballyhoura Community Radio, West Limerick 102 and Live 95fm for giving us air time.   Also thanks to our local papers, The Observer, Vale Star and Limerick Leader for printing photos and articles.   Without these vital contacts, no one would know what was happening in Granagh.
We have the DvD recorded so we may have it on sale the next night.

One More Night :  -   We usually perform the play for six nights every year, so the cast decided that they would do another night for those who were turned away and others who had missed out on it.     So ' Tarry Flynn ' will be back on stage Saturday 4th February at  8pm.   Last chance to see a great show - because when they're gone, they're gone  !!!!!

Welcome Home:   Delighted to report Tom Noonan is back in the parish after his hospital stay.   Get well wishes for a speedy recovery from all the cast and crew.

CONGRATULATIONS:
Nora O'Keeffe, Ballingarry, retired from her duties after arranging her final ' Senior citizens party' in the Woodlands last Sunday 29th Jan.  There were one hundred people sitting down to a meal and another thirty arrived for dancing to Pat Harvey.    Initiated by Dr. Robert Sheehy, Nora has been Treasurer and main organiser for the past forty two years.   Of course Denis and the family have all been involved one way or another, transporting hampers, prizes etc.   She has provided a wonderful service to the senior citizens in the community  and many hours of happiness over the years.    Well done, Nora.

COMMUNITY GAMES:
Draughts:  Next Sunday in the hall Ballingarry,  no less than four draughts teams representing Ballingarry/Granagh will compete in the county semi-finals and with a bit of luck the county finals of this years competition.   This is an unprecedented achievement and terrific credit is due to all the children and particularly their trainers Mike and Breda.
Supporters are welcome to attend on Sunday and we all wish the competitors the very best on the day.     Training continues this Thursday night at the usual times.
BIRTHDAY:
Congratulations to Thomas O'Donovan, Graigacurra,  who celebrated his 21st on Saturday night last.
