MRS. CARROLL RETIRES:
I'm sure all parishioners would like to convey their very best wishes to Mrs. Mary Carroll. N.T. who spent her last day in Granagh School on Friday 2nd Dec. Parents, members of the board of management and parents council gathered in her room, presentations were made and Mary in turn presented the school with a beautiful set of jerseys. Over her thirty two years, she has many a junior infant settled into the school routine and I'll bet they all remember with fondness their first year in school. She used to look after them so well that they didn't want to leave her room at all, when the time came.!
We wish her a long , happy and healthy retirement.

Granagh Utd VS. Fairview Rangers in Estuary Park Granagh, 03/12/11.
Granagh took to the field lead by captain John McDermot, the referee was happy to get proceedings under way, despite all the rainfall during the week. Granagh won the toss and chose to take tip and to play attack football with their 4-3-3 formation and it was pretty much end to end action for the first ten minutes. Fairview won a free kick on the edge of the box on twelve minutes and showed how dangerous they were with a superbly struck kick that got over the wall and dipped , but Darragh Cotter was fully alert in the Granagh goal and clutched the ball safely into his hands. This got the home support very vocal on the line with shouts of encouragement and indeed it seemed to work as Utd began to dominate the middle of the park with Damien O Donovan winning every ball and putting the visitors back four under a lot of pressure .
Just on twenty minutes Edward Sheehy won possession about thirty five yards out and turned well to beat his marker and let fly with a long range effort that for a moment every one thought would beat the keeper but it just shaved wide of the right hand post. Fairview knew they had a battle on their hands and you just sensed something was coming,. Sure enough with twenty eight minutes on the clock it was Damien who again won a kick out in the middle and played a smart ball out wide to Stephen who cut inside the full back and finished neatly to the bottom corner from twenty yards to give the keeper no chance. Fairview`s response to this was drop a man back to screen the back four and not concede another before half time as Granagh grew in confidence and really began to believe that they could cause an upset and topple the giants from the city. Half time 1-0.
Second half saw Fairview take tip and Granagh knew that the kitchen sink was about to be thrown at them as the visitors would have to go in search of the equaliser they needed to get back in this game. That is exactly what happened and for the first ten minutes Granagh were on the back foot, but to be fair they soaked the pressure well with Captain John McDermot and James Dillon winning every high ball in the centre of defense and making some great interceptions on the ground. Indeed the two full backs of Bradley Daly and Liam Barron dealt well with any wide threat that Fairview had to offer. It must be said Darragh Cotter in goals dealt well with a few long range shots and was always organising his rear guard.
By now fifteen minutes had elapsed into the second half and the hard work of Kyle Cotter and Edward Sheehy was beginning to show as possession was being won back in the middle and Kyle was playing some meaningful balls forward to the Granagh strike force with Michael O' Flaherty in particular causing all sorts of problems for Fairview. To be fair to Fairview they did move the ball very well down the left flank in particular and were passing pretty well but I think they had to be frustrated with their final delivery into the box.
Seventy minutes gone and Damien did very well to win possession from a Granagh kick out. He went wide on a great solo run in which he saw off a challenge with ease only to turn in on goal and see off yet another challenge to poke the ball through to the waiting Stephen Hickey who made no mistake in completing his brace from eight yards to make it 2-0 to the home side and send the home support wild on the side line.
The management of Jimmy Sheehy and Timmy Cotter decided to introduce fresh legs on the heavy ground after this in the shape of Brian Noonan for Seanie Cahill and Jack O Donoghue for Liam Barron. They helped deal with the push Fairview had to apply if they were to get back into this game, but try as they may Darragh Cotter held everything in the Granagh goal and with Mikie Flaherty dropping into the middle to get in some great tackles. The home team held on and now await the draw for the last thirty two. Congratulations to all.
