St. JOSEPH'S  FOUNDATION:
The open meeting regarding proposed plans for Liskennett Stud, was held on Monday night.   In attendance were
David Doyle, Dr. Martin O' Donnell, Eamon McCarthy and Conor Counihan.    David gave us a bit of background on the
Association.    It was set up by Dr. O'Donnell in 1968 because of the lack of services for people with a disability.
Today it caters for over six hundred users - 240 Adults and 360 Children.   They now have twelve Adult residences throughout
north Cork and south Limerick.   They have up to three hundred people on their payroll, not all full-time, and their running costs
are about fourteen million every year.
The Liskennett project is being undertaken because of lack of services for people with Autisim/Aspergers Syndrome.
Some 30,533 people in Ireland have Autisim and it is becoming more prevalent.   Out of the six hundred service users in the
Association, two hundred and forty nine are on the Autisim spectrum, most of whom are children.    The Association have been
looking for a suitable situation for a number of years, in order to cater for people with Autisim and Liskennett seems to fit the
bill.   They needed somewhere quiet, off the road, a safe area with little movement and a farm where they could introduce animal
therapy.
The building plans are as follows:-   Nine full time Residences and seven Respite places.  Each person will have their own little
apartment and in the high support area, there will be care provided on a 24/7 and 52/7 basis.  There will be an Equestrian Centre
consisting of an Indoor and Outdoor arena, stables and associated buildings, which will be open to all people with disabilities.                     There will be a Craft centre to include many activities such as Art and Pottery.    The old Walled Garden is to be restored and will
incorporate a new Pavilion.    All present buildings as well as trees are being retained.
The plans have been submitted and there is about a five week waiting period for the results.   If plans are passed they hope to
start early in the new year.   The Association hope that all the building can be done  at the one time rather than dividing into two
phases, however that will all depend on funding.    They are investing  a lot of their own money and are applying for grant aid also.
The €1.5 million euro  received from the JP McManus Pro-Am was the main reason this project got going, the money cannot be
used for land purchase but has to be put towards building construction.
The aim of the Association is  ' to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to live the life of their choice, to their fullest potential  '.
This project will  greatly enhance the lives of people with Autisim because everything there will be geared towards their needs  and
so they should live a much happier and contented life.    Some may progress to complete independent living out in the community, some
may never.   The Association hope to become integrated into community life and down the road , local services will be required in the
day to day running of the centre.  The plans can be seen at their offices in Charleville and they will be happy to answer any queries.
Wishing them every success with this very beneficial project.
