Victorious U8s:

What a fantastic finish to the soccer season for the Club, another title and cup made its way to Granagh on Sunday last.

Manager, Seamus Murphy was ecstatic with the win and very proud of his panel of players. Shountrade were tipped as favourites but

it did not go their way on the day.

Granagh began the match with two disallowed goals from corners, unfortunately they went straight in without a touch from their own players.

However, they kept attacking and not long after, David Riordan got a chance to score the first goal. Shortly after kick off, we saw Sam O'Sullivan

racing up field as Gearoid got ready to take a line ball. He must have had a premonition because he headed the ball beautifully into the net to make it 2-0.

Meanwhile Denis Sheehy had no time to be sunning himself, he made at least six brilliant saves in the first half. They came at him from every angle but

he was ready and waiting. Gearoid Lynch was all over the field and added two fine goals to the score board. Ciara English and William O'Regan took

shots on the goal but were denied by the goalie. Just on half time Denis went down dramatically with the final save and was escorted off the field.

The second half got underway at full speed and eventually Adare got their first long awaited goal. Both teams fought for possession and got many shots on

goal but no score. Denis was kept under pressure again with corner after corner. At one stage Adare had a good chance of a goal, Denis was on his own,

but got a knee to it and saved the day. The pressure was getting to the mothers who had a path worn up and down the line ! Eventually the ref blew full

time and a mighty cheer went up. Sam O'Sullivan proudly accepted the cup on behalf of the team. As well as three cheers for a gallant Shountrade, there

was an extra three for Jimmy Sheehy, joint Manager, who had been with them all the way. However he was being kept updated by Kay and was

definitely there in spirit. Man of the Match had to go to the Chelsea Keeper, Denis Sheehy. Congratulations to all the panel : Sam O'Sullivan (capt),

Denis Sheehy, Shane Collins, Gearoid Lynch, David Riordan, Daniel Herlihy, Sean Murphy, Ciara English, William O'Regan, Eoin Enright, Dara Clifford,

CRUDEM UPDATE:

Hospital Sacre Coeur:

I just returned from a visit and it is encouraging to see the Haitian administration and staff start to assume responsibility for the earthquake patients. T

here were 120 earthquake patients still at the hospital and our regular patient population has increased to 125 because of the awareness throughout

the country of the many services available at HSC.

During the week I was there I was the only volunteer physician for 3 days and since I'm an ophthalmologist and haven't done primary care in

thirty years, the Haitian internists and surgeons assumed responsibility for the patients. We instructed the volunteer nurses on the routine of contacting the

Haitian physicians who all live on site and we also instituted an on call consultation format with a group of specialists in the US. So far this has been

successful in maintaining quality of care but will be an ongoing process as the volunteers decrease in number.

The prosthetic lab is up and functioning and we fit our first six patients. Their smiles of joy brought tears to our eyes. As we continue to fit the more

than eighty patients with amputations we are blessed with volunteer prosthetists who are actively training our Haitian staff in their skill.

Finally I'd like to share a story about our wonderful volunteers. More than one thousand two hundred volunteers since January continue to provide

excellent care to our patients as well as teach our staff. They pay their own travel expenses and take time from work resulting in lost income. However

the most impressive thing I continue to notice is how they develop personal relationships with the patients and staff which leads to extraordinary acts of

kindness.

At the last nightly meeting before I left I was told of a volunteer who recruited other volunteers and patients to go to the ICU and fix the hair and clean

a young woman with a cervical spine injury who is paralyzed from the neck down. This poor woman has been in our ICU waiting for spinal surgery to

stabilize her spine so she can be moved to a rehabilitation facility. It took five volunteers to stabilize her while a fellow patient cleaned and braided her hair.

Other volunteers cleaned her legs and feet and massaged them with lotion. When they were finished they were rewarded with a beautiful smile from the

patient that lit up the whole room. It was her first smile since arriving!!

As we continue to plan for the future we are trying to determine the total number of beds we can afford to maintain. We are also looking at the many

infrastructure renovations and new construction that will be needed. The most recent estimate indicated that the cost will be around $2 million.

Report from Peter Kelly MD, President Hospital Sacre Coeur.
