Local NOTES 27/28th May

CELEBRATION NIGHT:

Our celebration night for volunteers was held in the Community Centre last Friday night. It was to thank those who have contributed in any way, towards the success
of the different activities, that contribute to the upkeep of the Hall.
On behalf of the Development Association, the chairman, Mike O'Regan stated that normally volunteers get very little appreciation for their time and work and are often taken for granted. This was one way of showing how much their support is appreciated and how vital it is to a small community.
The Drama group make the most headlines but there are other groups who should be remembered for their contributions to the Hall.
The Card Committee have been organising games on Monday nights, for more years than they care to remember. For over thirty years they were they only source of income for the Hall and they kept it open and available for everyone to use.
For the last two years the Tea Dancing Committee have give up their time, once every month, and through their commitment, it has become a great success.
The Granagh Players have added another wonderful dimension to community life and because of the number of volunteers helping out, it makes it much easier to organise and without a doubt a huge success. With regard to the producer and cast of ' Poor Beast in the Rain '
As ye all know the recessionary times we are in, with cutbacks all round, we cannot be seen to be spending wildly, so unfortunately… we cannot send off the cast on that two week holiday in Mexico - that Jimmy promised !!!! However, there was a little memento - a framed photograph of the cast - for each person.
There was an extra presentation made on the night to Clr. Jim Houlihan. The Chairman stated that we couldn’t let this opportunity pass without a small gesture of appreciation to our local County Councilor on the occasion of his upcoming retirement.
Jim has been a marvelous servant to the local community and he has given twenty four years service as a public representative.
He was instrumental in organising a Fas Scheme a number of years ago to build the boundary wall around the Hall. It was with his help that the Card Committee got the car park out the back tarred. He helped apply for grants to cover the painting of the hall inside and out.
In recent times he helped with our grant application for new heaters, new chairs, sound system and new ceiling in the kitchen.
He was always welcoming and most helpful with any advice and he was wished a long, happy and healthy retirement. Marian Noonan presented him with a piece of Galway crystal on behalf of the Association.
Last, but by no means least, a floral presentation was made to Secretary, Marian Noonan, to thank her for all her hard work and dedication over the year.

Last Sunday we held our Annual Sports Day for the first time in Granagh Soccer Field courtesy of the Soccer Club and we the committee of Ballingarry/Granagh Community Games would like to thank the Granagh Soccer committee for the use of their field and facilities for the day. Despite the rain, families came out for the day and took part in races ranging from Toddlers right up to Mothers and Fathers (with no casualties thank god). We had our 3 legged races as well and the day ended with our very own Irish underage international soccer player Anthony Forde presenting the medals to the children.
Anthony has taken part in community games events from his Toddler days to his teenage years and has been very successful. He was a member of the mixed U11 and U14 Tag Rugby Teams who have to their name a Silver and 2 Gold All Ireland Medals.
