U10:
On Saturday the 14th our U10 team were away to Newcastle West B in the league.
As always we were treated to a very entertaining game of football.
Newcastle West were first to score with an early strike and when they were awarded a penalty late in the half,
it made the half time score 2-0 to the hosts.
Granagh tried hard in the second half to get back in to the game and forced some fine saves from the Newcastle
goal keeper, but with all their effort the goals never came and so Newcastle West took all three points.
U14:
Also on Saturday the 14th our U14 team were away to Div 1 side Newcastle West Rovers A in the 2nd round of the cup.
The lads really stepped up to this challenge and after five minutes were unlucky not be one up when Danny Shelton took a
shot that shaved the upright, but to be fair Rovers had a few good shots too that went very close as the half went on but with
no goals the half time score read 0-0. The second half was a very similar contest, with chances at both ends until Jack Walsh
netted, with one minute of normal time left, to give Granagh a 1-0 lead in which you would think game set and match, but as
football all to often proves it’s never over until the final whistle sounds. When Rovers got a corner from the tip off we failed to pick
up the loose man on the edge of the box and so paid the price when he slotted home a fine goal, to level things up again and take
this game to extra time.
Five minutes into extra time Padraig Lynch added his name to the score sheet with a superb long range shot that beat the keeper
to give Granagh the lead again, which they held on to this time and progressed to the quarter final stages of the cup.
Well done lads.
TEA DANCING:
We had a big crowd at our afternoon dance on the Sunday 15th, with music by Liam O'Sullivan. It was one of those beautiful spring
evenings and once our dancers got going we turned off the heating and had to open the doors while the tea was being served.
All our usual dancers turned up and we had some new faces also.
The Ballingarry bus was first to arrive, closely followed by Pat Quinn's ' Love Bus' from Newtown.
The Monagea and Knockainey gangs were a little late but made it just in time. The glamorous ladies from Ardagh, along with the
men of course, had their usual table in the corner. The Moloneys, Mulqueens and numerous others make up a great crowd whom we
look forward to meeting each month. On Sunday, Mrs Maureen Lynch celebrated her birthday and she was presented with a bouquet
by Mick Fitzgerald.
Once again we had loads of prizes for the raffle, due to the generosity of the people attending the dance.
Of course, without the ladies who bake and supply us with delicious pastries for the tea, we would not be able to keep going at all.
Sincere thanks to Nora Mulqueen, Anne O'Rourke, Mary Boyce, Mary Carroll, Mary Lynch ,Anne Hickey and Marian Noonan.
Also our helpers who serve teas, sell tickets, wash up etc - many thanks to Marietta Sheehan, Anne Fitzgibbon, Eileen Noonan,
Martin Carroll, Pajoe Boyce and Sean Cagney. Hope I haven't forgotten anyone.
Our last dance for this year will be on April 19th, music by John Shanahan & The Nightingales.
U13 CHOIR:
After a number of cancellations, the U12 choir eventually got to perform in the community games competition last Friday night in
Rathkeale. They were competing against three other choirs and were last up to perform. They had to sing three songs and they
chose 'Feelin Groovy', 'A Mhuire Mhathair' and 'The Lion sleeps Tonight'
They gave a wonderful performance which gained them second place and Silver Medals.
Their leaders Susie Butler and Noelle Dunworth wished to compliment the choir on their performance and how well behaved they were
as they sat and listened to the other performers. They also wish to thank the parents who stay on at the practices to help out with
supervision.
Congratulations to Noelle and Susie also, for giving so generously of their time every week and for giving the children the experience and
opportunity to take part in this competition for the first time.
YOUTH CLUB:
Next club night is Friday 3rd April, 8pm to 9.30pm. Finally, we got around to arranging our course on car and motorbike engines.
This is made possible by the Moloney family, who have kindly agreed to share their vast knowledge and their wide variety of bikes, quads,
cars etc with our members. It is a fabulous opportunity to examine the vehicles up close and to have questions answered.
Ger has actually built a motorbike himself and they hope to go to Mondello racing shortly. Kevin is a qualified mechanic and he hopes to
have a very rare Japenese import to show us. Paul has recently taken up car photography which he uses to put together calendars etc.
We have a number of limited places for non-members who are really interested in learning more about cars, but please contact me on
087-9139902 (evenings) for further details.
