Local News W/E 25th OCT

DEVELOPMENT ASSOC:

CLEAN - UP:
Sincere thanks to our dedicated committee members who turned up on Saturday to tidy up the area around the
Church, School and Hall. It makes such a difference to see the place free of untidy weeds and the grass edges trimmed. To make
it happen, however, people have to sacrifice their time and the parish is so lucky to have people who are willing to do that. New
volunteers are always welcome and indeed will be required as the same people will not always be available. Thanks to, M.Houlihan,
S. Cagney, J. Chawke, P J Boyce, J. Bennett, M. Noonan, A. Hickey, M. Lynch and M.O'Regan.

TEA DANCE:
Our first dance last Sunday was very successful and most enjoyable. On behalf of the Association, Marian welcomed
back our friends from Ardagh, Monagea, Cappamore, Croom and Knockainey. She also welcomed the new group from Ballingarry who
travelled by bus, which was kindly arranged by the members of the pastoral council, Maria, Nora, Mairead and Eileen. She also
remembered some of our dancers who had passed away during the year, namely Kathy O'Connor and John Ryan. She thanked all
those who donated their beautiful home baking which is the highlight of the afternoon, the volunteers who helped out in the kitchen and
those who kindly supplied raffle prizes. Music was supplied by The Nightingales, who as usual, were excellent.

PILATES:
Our first class began last Thursday and we had a great crowd. Only six weeks left to go.

CARDS - 45 DRIVE:
The Committee have decided to begin another season of cards on this bank holiday Monday 27th October,
at 8.45pm. Looking forward to seeing all the players back again.

on 1/ 2 nd November. If there are any teenagers interested in helping out in the club, we would be delighted. This course helps with
team building, leadership training, committee roles and programme planning. Closing date 24th October.
Operation Christmas Child : We will have empty boxes on the night and if the members have any small toys that are not being used,
please bring them along and share with children who are less well off.

GRANAGH PLAYERS: Meetings and readings are taking place at the present, we are awaiting the outcome with great interest !

YOUTH CHOIR:

Congratulations to all involved with the youth choir. I just heard them for the first time, last Sunday, and they were
fantastic. They put so much work into their hymns, backed by the guitar music and beautiful harmonies. They really lifted the entire
ceremony and everybody enjoyed them. They will always welcome more members and they rehearse each Thursday evening at 6.30pm
in Ballingarry Church. We look forward to hearing them again in November.

DEFIBRILLATORS :

At a recent meeting in Ballingarry, a committee was formed to look at the possibility of purchasing three defibrillators for both parishes.
As you are aware these are life-saving devices which aid in the ongoing battle against sudden cardiac death It is estimated that there are
approximately five thousand deaths annually, in Ireland. This equates to about fourteen deaths per day, across all age groups.
The machines themselves are expensive and cost about E 1,800. each.
Once they have been purchased, it will be necessary to train up community members on their use and basic CPR. Training is provided by
the Irish Red Cross at a cost of E495 per ten people.
However, to get the process up and running, the committee are going to have to rely on donations from the community. There are collection
boxes in O'Gormans and O'Gradys. Anyone who is interested in being trained in the use of the Defibrillator and CPR should forward their
name to Nora Mullane, 087- 6679835.

GRANAGH UNITED F.C:

REMINDER: No Halloween Night celebrations in the soccer pitch this year, due to insurance regulations.

U16s: On Saturday morning, the 18th, the U16s travelled to Tarbert to play Ferry Rangers. However, after arriving at the pitch, the referee deemed the pitch unplayable.

U12s: On the same Saturday afternoon, the U12s were at home to Athea. Athea were the first to hit the net inside the first ten minutes of the game, but Granagh boys never dropped their heads and played some good football. Excellent defending from Jack O'Donoghue started the build up to the equaliser, which was then followed by a great pass in from James Herlihy to Kyle Cotter, who put the ball away with great precision. Unfortunately though, just on the stroke of half time Athea found the net for the second time. Granagh lifted their game in the second half and definitely played the better football but their efforts never paid off and they lost the game 2 - 1. Better luck next time !

Juniors: On Sunday afternoon, 19th, the juniors were at home to Abbeyfeale United B in the first round of the Reidy Cup. Granagh got stuck into this game from the kickoff and seven minutes into the game Stephen O Brien who was working very hard on the right wing swung in a cross for Denis Noonan but Abbeyfeale handled the ball inside the box which resulted in a penalty. Denis Noonan then stepped up to take the penalty and tucked it away nicely. This was how the scoreline remained in the first half with even football being played except for a ten minute spell when Granagh had to weather a storm from the Abbey lads. Granagh started bright in the second half creating plenty of chances and were probably playing the better football but to Abbeyfeale's credit they never gave up and fought hard. However Granagh showed great heart and determination and held on for a well deserved win. The final score was 1-0. Well done lads!

LOTTO:
There was no winner of the 10,200 euro in the Lotto draw this week. The numbers drawn were 7,18, 23, 29. The lucky Dip winners of 20 Euro were Eddie O' Dwyer, Kay Sheehy, Betty and Rose Fitzgerald.
