Our production this year is the comedy   ' London Assurance ' by Dion Boucicault.   You will remember we performed another of his works    ' The Shaughraun ' in 2011.    He was in a terrible hurry with this play as he wrote it in thirty days only.
The play is set in London of 1840s which was a different era completely with regard to the attitudes of the age and the flowery language         of the time.    Etiquette was all important and politeness required at all times.!    It is even rubbing off on the cast, while the producer insists on using his own style of flowery language. !
As far as I can see, this play has never been performed in Ireland before - could we have a world première - in Granagh ??
The Plot:   Some have come for the money, some have come for marriage and some have come for as much free alcohol as they can lay their hands on.!    We meet the rotund Sir Harcourt Courtly (J. Chawke) who is totally absorbed in himself and his appearance.!!   He leaves the comfort of his London house to visit his friend Squire Max Harkaway (T. Sheehan) at Oak Hall.   Max's niece Grace (M. O'Connor) has been betrothed to Sir Harcourt and she has to marry him to secure her inheritance.  Coincidentally, his son Charles (J. Bennett) -  on the run from his debtors, who isn't these days -  arrives at Oak Hall with his companion, the fast-talking, free-loading Dazzle (L. Houlihan).
However, once Lady Gay Spanker (M. Stapleton) dismounts, Sir Harcourt is quite distracted by her !    She must keep an eye on her doddery husband Adolphus (Rd. O'Donoghue) - who if he doesn't take his medication can become quite erratic.   Indeed the French Maid, Ms Pert (M. Lynch) has to watch out for him ?     The local lawyer Meddle (S. Murphy) - a Constant annoyance to his betters !                  The valet, Ms Cool (E. Chawke) along with Martin (K. Fitzgibbon) and James (J. English) are kept on their toes - packing, unpacking, up and down to the wine cellar for refills.!    The ladies who lunch- Lady Wendy Whiplash (L. Hanley) and Lady Amelia Lurcher ( M. Sheehy) - the names speak for themselves.     Finally we have Thora (T. Noonan) and Lottie (C. Clifford) whose dialogue and singing has to be heard to be believed.!     A greats night entertainment assured.
