BALLINGARRY/GRANAGH
COMMUNITY GAMES:

DRAUGHTS“Gold on the Double”
Regular readers of this column will have known that two teams left our locality last Saturday and headed for Hospital to compete in the County Finals
of the 2010 Community Games. The journey began last October and we have travelled to a lot of places since.
U/10s:
This team of Luke Flynn, Eve Higgins, Mark Sheahan, Sophie Alymer, Eoin Sheahan, Gearoid Lynch and Orla Lenihan get better everyday.
Against Rathkeale in the Semi Finals we finished level after some tremendous battles. Both sides saw victory only to be out-maneuvered by
their opponent. Extra time was called for. After four matches it was still level 2-2, we needed to win the last match, so had Rathkeale.
All eyes focused in, tension was high pressure was enormous on our player who was numerically down but however he managed it, he
turned the table in its head with lightening speed and carried our team to the final. The months of hard work had paid off!
In the final we faced our near neighbours Croagh A who had accounted for Croagh B in the other semi. This too proved to be an epic.
We raced into a 5-2 lead only to need 1 more victory to claim Gold. But true to form, Croagh A fought back and the score read 5-4.
Down to the last match again. What tension! After some clever play our player outfoxed his opponent and we crossed the finished line.
Gold was ours. Well done to this team as they proved themselves beyond all expectations’.
U12s:
This team of Maurice Noonan, Siobhan Toomey, Kevin Noonan, Sean English, Cailinn Noonan, Sean O’Connor and Conor Lynch come up
against Hospital in the Semi Final. After some brilliant play we accounted for this gallant side on the score line of 6-4. This contest was
also very close and it also come down to the last game. In the final we came up against Kildimo/Pallaskenry, who incidentally piped us at
the post last year in the U10 Final. Again this was nailbiting stuff and great contests were had by both sides. Our teams “never say die”
attitude was very evident and it was very clear from the offset that nothing was going to be easy. On the game went and when the dust had
finally settled the sides were level. Extra time was needed as a clear winner had to be found. It must be said that this team have trained
since last October and when the pressure was on, each player showed their true colour and with the finish line in sight we were not going
to be beaten and when the result was called out the cheers from our large group of supporters could be heard on the hill of Knockfierna.
Both our teams now go on represent Limerick in the Munster Finals to be held in UL Limerick on the 27th March, 2010.
We started out training in October with 35 players (5 Teams) and along the way we lost 3 teams who all played to the best of their ability.
A big thank you to all parents who brought players to training without whom Saturday would not have been possible. Also to Kathy Noonan
for her help at training and to our Secretary Anne Higgins who ensures that all is in order and that things run smoothly.
Finally to Breda Lynch and Mike Sheahan who managed and trained the players to an excellent standard. The hard work at training was
very evident last Saturday as no player panicked under pressure.
Finally to our fourteen boys and girls with Gold Medals, congratulations and best of luck in the Munster Finals. Please note that a copy of Birth Cert
and two passport photos must be given to Anne Higgins as soon as possible.
Thanks also to Micheal O’Brien and Co for officiating on the day and to the people in Hospital who provided everyone with refreshments through
the day it was much appreciated and very enjoyable.

Girls U/13 Indoor Soccer:
U.L. was the venue for the County Final last Sunday morning. First up the girls played a very tough Rathkeale side and after a great battle came
out on top and went on to play the Final against Bruff/Grange/Meanus. Our girls put up a great fight against this strong side but unfortunately
had to settle for 2nd place.
Well done to Aine Lenihan, Aine Sheehy, Stephanie Anderson, Rebecca Noonan, Siobhan Toomey, Tara Lynch, Niamh Power and Rachel
Anderson also to their Managers Claire Anderson, Mary Noonan and Martha O’Connor.
