AIFREANN AR CNOC Na FIRÍNNE:
On our Ladys' Birthday, the rain stopped, the skies lightened and we had a beautiful evening to celebrate Mass on the Hillside.
A crowd of up to three hundred people of all ages, made their way to the site of the Mass Rock on the eastern side of the hill.
Wellies were the fashion of the evening, as it had been raining all day up to six o clock.
Concelebrating the Mass with Abbot Mark Hedderman we had Fr. Peadar De Búrca, Fr. Kennedy, Croom and Fr. Dan Lane.
There was a presentation of symbols before Mass began:- A Cross to remind us that our faith and freedom as God's children was
bought at the cost of life itself, in Jesus. A Lantern:- to symbolise the light of faith that was kept burning through centuries of
persecution. Wheat:- to remind us of the Eucharist, for which so many risked their lives.
A Flowering Plant:- To remind us of the blossoming of faith out of faithfullness and risk.
A Horseshoe: Johnny Sheahan presented the shoe to remind us that the priest and people attending Mass in those days had to be
wary of hearing horses' hooves as it meant danger and possibly death.
Looking down on the peaceful plain stretching over to the Galtees, it was difficult to imagine what our ancestors went through to
ensure that the faith was not lost. They did not have all our conveniences, had very little material- wise and had to make many sacrifices
which they did willingly. We have everything we could possibly want, yet find it very difficult to find half an hour to spare for a
Sunday Mass ? ? A difficult one to explain.
As our Mass ended, a slight breeze began to rise but the rain did not return. Many people made their way to the Community Centre for a
cuppa and a chat with Fr. Mark and he was delighted to meet many of his neighbours and friends. He commented afterwards on the
beautiful home baking that was served up and how the taste brought him back to his young days.
Unfortunately he had to make his way back to Dublin again that night so could not delay.
The Development Association would like to thank all those who helped prepare the Hall, and to the ladies who provided the delicious home
baking.
GUITAR CLASSES:
Classes will begin again on Tuesday 22nd Sept in the community centre. For further details contact Susie on 087 - 9873379.
YOUTH CLUB:
I am looking for someone or two to take over the running of the club as I am not in a position to do so. Full support is given from the
Limerick Youth Service and Damien McMahon is the club support and development worker. He has arranged a Mini-Region meeting
for the East Limerick clubs on Wednesday 30th Sept, 7.30pm, Bruff Community Café. All youth clubs are expected to have an attendee at
this meeting. Therefore if the club is to continue, I would like to hear from any interested party before then. Mary 061-399152.
