Southend  Trip:
Eventually, I am getting around to the exchange trip our U16 team made to Southend Manor, Essex, in May.
The connection with the UK came through John Hedderman, a nephew of the late Kitty (Gorey) Fitzgerald.   John was born in Manister but
spent many of his childhood summers in Kilmore.   He moved to the UK and set up home there but never lost his links with Granagh.   In April 2011 Southend, who are twinned with Charleville and Mallow Clubs were coming over to play in the Gerard Fitzpatrick Tournament.   John arranged with Kevin Clifford that they would travel to Granagh for a friendly match on their arrival.  The team arrived on a beautiful sunny evening, accompanied by team manager, Ian Ness, club chairman, Bob Westley, team coach Ciaran Law and a number of parents.   During the reception afterwards, Southend extended an invitation to visit their club.
The visit took place on the weekend of 4th May.   Travelling with the fifteen team members, were coaches Jimmy Sheehy and Kevin Clifford.
Richard O'Donoghue also decided to go, to keep an eye on the coaches !    Niall and Eoin Clifford persuaded their father to bring them along as well, not to have empty seats ?    The bus left O'Gormans at 3am and arrived at Waterford airport to find it closed - they were going to be first in when the doors opened.   After a short flight, they arrived in Southend Airport and headed for the Skylark Hotel about an hour away, just in time for breakfast.    The proposed ' rest ' as per itinerary did not materialise, and the three chaperones found themselves being dragged off to the nearest shopping centre.    The boys did not have too much time here as they had to head back to prepare for their match at the club grounds at 7pm.     The team played well, Ed Sheehy scored, but the jet lag took its toll and they were defeated 3-1.   All returned to the clubhouse for finger food and each player was presented with a full kit, jersey, socks & togs.   Kevin presented Southend with a set of scarves ( black & amber) bearing both Club crests.
On Saturday 5th, they had a few hours free in the morning so the boys headed to the shops again.?   Kevin, Jimmy and Richard were on point duty so they hadn't a chance to buy anything..!   Not even a fridge magnet !!    After dropping off their purchases they headed to the Club grounds to see the Southend Senior team play Macclesfield Town, Cheshire, in their final game of the season.  Granagh were installed in the corporate boxes for this match...
They returned to the Clubhouse again that evening as Southend were running a fundraising race night.   Everyone was up again at 7am Sunday, for a final breakfast and arrived back safely in Granagh that evening.    All enjoyed the experience and hopefully it can be repeated again.   Damien voted snazziest dresser !!!!

Purtell and Darragh Casey.   The referee for the night was Liam OConnor who did a perfect job, showing great respect for both sets of boys throughout.   Ballingarry\Granagh Community Games would also like to thank Anita Hawkes for co-ordinating the whole competition and all the respective team managers throughout the year for their co-operation and assistance in organising the games..
